A hame is one of the two curved pieces attached to a draft horse's collar that supports the traces. Traces are the chains or straps that connect the hame to the implement or vehicle the horse is pulling, transmitting the horse's pulling power. The hames and traces work together to allow a horse to pull heavy loads, transferring the horse's strength to the object being pulled.
