ContributorCommunity HistoryDescriptionThis piece of embroidery is handmade from Palestine. The photo shows a cushion cover featuring embroidered details on a yellow/gold metallic fabric. It includes the phrases Souvenir of Palestine, Australian Commonwealth Military Forces, and Mosque of Omar. The numerals "19" and "41" are sewn onto the cushion, likely representing the year 1941, during World War II. The design also features a king's crown, two flags, a rising sun, palm trees, and an image of the Mosque of Omar, all bordered by a brown edge and blue fringe.TypeTextileCollectionNewland family collectionDate created1941MaterialsSilk, wool, cotton sateenHistorical details
After World War I, the Ottoman Empire was defeated, and the League of Nations assigned the administration of Palestine to Britain. Palestine was under British mandate from 1922 until 1948, and Australian forces were part of the Allied efforts in the Middle East.
These embroideries were souvenirs bought by British and Australian soldiers serving in the Mediterranean and Middle East during World War II. They were highly sought after due to their colourful designs and the ease with which they could be folded and mailed home to family members.
