Although the game's history dates back to around 2500 BCE, playing with coloured, glass marbles was a popular pastime for children during the twentieth century.
Different types of games can be played using marbles; a popular game in the United Kingdom and United States is called ring taw (or 'ringer'), in which a number of small marbles are placed inside a ring, which has been drawn on the ground.
