Metro Coast - Illumine by Alan Muller

"Metro Coast Illumine is from of a body of work on the theme of urbanisation of the Perth coast. When I returned to live in Perth in 1997 after thirteen years living in the eastern states, the way Perth had expanded north and south along the coast was astonishing. 

This artwork was inspired by a section of West Coast Highway, just south of Karrinyup Road, where it turns towards the ocean and the line of streetlights lead the eye to the ocean beyond. The roundabout signs reference urban development on land that was once beach sand dunes.  Surf board riding had been around for decades but skate boarding had become hugely popular. I was at a beach cafe and remember seeing a skate board rider leaping into the air with the ocean beyond." - Alan Muller, Artist
