Harman Willoughby Lance migrated to Australia in 1912 and took up a post in Geraldton as an electrical engineer, working on the Powerhouse. Harman Willoughby Lance bought five acres of land in Bayswater and called is 'Lanceville.' He later built a built a holiday home called 'Lancecote' on Flora Terrace in North Beach. Lance started the Golden Coach Motor Company running an early bus service. He also served in WWI enlisting for the Imperial Armed Forces. Lance had an interest in beekeeping, becoming the Government Apiarist for the Department of Agriculture, and later developing his own hives and selling honey.
Hugh Lance was Harman's son and was involved in many projects for the Public Works Department in Western Australia including the construction camp at Canning Dam, 1935-1936. Hugh worked as a timekeeper and general clerical assistant.
