The annual horse muster was an exciting event on the calendar. In 1924 the event was captioned on film. The area where the horse muster was conducted is now where the Kingsway shopping centre stands. There were other locations around the district that also held musters.
"Local residents have many rich memories of the Star Swamp and the surrounding bushland. For example, there was a stock holding yard on the northside of the swamp and some posts from it are still standing. In the same area, a horse dealer used to cater for the needs of the drovers. Wild brumbies were common in the area and up to about 15-18 years ago there was still an annual round up called Ring In Day " writes Joan Petroboni, in 'Recollections from a Shoreline'
Ernest Lund Mitchell's photographs dominated the Western Australian commercial and official markets from 1909 until the late 1920s. He undertook private commissions and was engaged by commercial clients, such as the Western Mail, and several State government departments.
