Brownes dairy is an iconic Western Australian company located, since the 1970's, on Geddes Road in Balcatta, which is the main production site. It is the oldest and largest dairy processor in Western Australia.
Edward Browne began dairy farming in 1886 in Shenton Park, and in 1915 purchased the Wholesale Dairy Farmers Cooperative Society Ltd, which changed names to Brownes Ltd in 1917. Browne established a depot at Brunswick in the South West expanding his business into ice cream manufacturing and cold storage.
When Edward passed away his sons took over the business and Brownes became the first company in WA to produce pasteurised milk in bottles, under the name 'Golden Seal.' Many school children in the 1950's and 1960's recall drinking milk from glass bottles.
Description
Brownes Dairy Ltd was sold to Peters Ice Cream (W.A) and changed its name to Brownes Dairy Pty. Ltd in the 1960's.
