Hawke surfboards was started by Peter and Len Hawke in 1954, with their enterprises at 21 Wilcock Avenue, Tuart Hill, WA, phone: 29-2922. They started making plywood wooden boards before moving onto balsa and fibreglass boards in 1956. In 1962 they moved their surfboard business from a shed in their parent’s backyard in Wilcock Avenue Tuart Hill and established Hawke Surfboards in Scarborough Beach Rd Osborne Park, phone 24 3853. In August 2021, David Hawke stated "In 1954 two teenage brothers, Peter, thirteen, and Len, fifteen, hit the surf at Watermans Bay with a borrowed wooden longboard. The experience inspired the pair so much that they continued their involvement in the water sports equipment industry for fifty years." (Surfing WA)
Over the years Hawke Surfboards evolved into Hawke Brothers Pty. Ltd and moved to the Frobisher Street showrooms and factory in Osborne Park. A widening range of products that serviced water sports other than surfing began to develop. The Frobisher Street showrooms and factory in Osborne Park have been expanded on three occasions – testament to Peter and Len’s ability to produce high quality products in fibreglass and other plastics. Around 1972, Hawke surfboards was at 396 Scarborough Beach Road, Osborne Park, Western Australia, phone: 24-3852. Decal courtesy of Snazzy, August 2021.
