James was a 24 year old surveyor from Osborne Park when he enlisted on 16 June 1915. He sailed from Fremantle on board the HMAT Benalla with the 17th Reinforcements on 1 November 1915.
He was killed in action at Pozieres, France on 7 August 1916 and is buried at Serre Road Cemetery France.
