James was a 24-year-old surveyor from Osborne Park and newly married to Mary, when he enlisted on 16 June 1915. He sailed from Fremantle on board the HMAT Benalla with the 17th Reinforcements on 1 November 1915. He was killed in action at Pozieres, France on 7 August 1916 and is buried at Serre Road Cemetery France
