Yondee Shane Hansen, is a Nyoongar artist working with paint, sand and ochres to depict the stories and legends of his people. He describes his work as ‘abstract in presentation but narrative in content’.
Yondee was born in the south-west of Western Australia in 1964, at Dumbleyung, 270 km south of Perth. His bush name, ‘Yondee’, means Black Goanna. As a child, Yondee saw and learnt about his grandfather’s ground paintings. He continues this practice, translating them and bringing them to new audiences.
Yondee Shane Hansen has painted with the Campfire group of Aboriginal artists in Brisbane as well as exhibiting his work in galleries in Western Australia, NSW, Queensland and overseas. He currently works from his studio in Yokine, Western Australia.
