Scarborough Bus Service

The first weekend bus service to Scarborough Beach is reported as being operated by Mr McCorkill in 1916. Passengers would board his bus at the tram terminus on the corner of Oxford Street, and Scarborough Beach Road, Mount Hawthorn. They travelled along Scarborough Beach Road which at this time was a wooden plank road. Herbert Baker who owned a poultry farm on Scarborough Beach Road, Innaloo, was the next to start a bus service. He converted a Model T Ford truck into a crude open bus with seats welded on the back. He later purchased and converted a Chev truck. The next bus service to come to Scarborough started in 1927, and was owned and operated by Harold Millet, a motor mechanic. He named the new company Scarboro Bus Company, leaving out the 'ugh' on the end of Scarborough, because the full name would not fit in the destination box of his new buses. In 1962, the Scarboro Bus Company was purchased and taken over by the MTT (Metropolitan Transport Trust).
