An extensive area of swampland is situated in the localities of Balcatta, Stirling and Osborne Park, which were developed as market gardens prior to World War 1. The Joondanna and Yambago Marshes form part of this area but have been increasingly assimilated into urban development.
The West Australian newspaper on 9 April 1914 mentions an "Offer for Sale by Public Auction for the southern area of Osborne Park, containing an area of 7 acres. This land is part of the Yambago Swamp, the richest and best swamp in Osborne Park, and particularly adapted for intense culture. The property is leased for £35 per annum."
