John Joseph Magee was born in May 1931 in Inglewood. His family moved frequently due to his father's job as a railway worker, living in places like Narrogin, Merredin, Spencers Brook, Meekatharra, Mt Barker, and returning to Narrogin. In 1946, John moved back to Perth to attend Aquinas College, a more formal and disciplined school than he was used to, which was initially challenging.
By 1948, John had settled in and excelled, finishing his final year as Head Boy, Dux, a member of the Footy 18, Rowing 8, and Captain of Cadets. He then began working as a Cadet Engineer at the Postmaster-General's Department (now Telstra). His engineering career took him to many places, including Melbourne in 1952, where he met Bernadette Thompson. John and Bernadette returned to Perth in 1953, got engaged, and married in 1955.
John was a lifelong volunteer, supporting Our Lady of Lourdes School and Parish, Sacred Heart College Sorrento, and many other organizations. He was a life member of the Old Aquinians Association, a 50-year member and two-time Honour Medal recipient of the Knights of the Southern Cross, and Deputy Chairman of Southern Cross Homes. In retirement, he enjoyed golf, bridge, and following the Eagles, along with traveling and spending time with family and friends.
John and his wife Bernadette were generous benefactors, supporting many causes with a strong commitment to social justice and education. They were dedicated to Notre Dame from its inception, driven by their enduring faith and love for their family.
