John Wall Hardey, along with his brother Joseph, charted the Tranby and arrived at Swan River in 1830. They brought along with them a number of indentured convicts. In 1836 the Hardey family built a permanent home known as the Tranby House and it stands today as one of the historical monuments of Western Australia.
Maylands was part of the City of Stirling until 1998 when boundary changes made it part of the City of Bayswater.
