Due to the gold rush in the 1890s the demand on fruit and vegetables grow resulting in new market gardens being established. During this time swampland in the areas of Osborne Park, Balcatta, Jandakot, Spearwood and Wanneroo were drained creating new areas for market gardening adding to the list of already existing market gardens.
