Lot 260 Cape Street in Tuart Hill

The below story was entered with this photograph into the 2018 History and Heritage Awards:

Between 1951 and 1952, at lot 260 Cape St, opposite Grenville Reserve, our house was built with love and lots of sweat. Not by builders, but by dad and his self-taught tradesmen brothers working between jobs and on weekends. My brothers Lou and Ron worked as juniors at Lilleyman's Tile Factory on the eastern side of Flinders Street, where after hours in their own time, they made the tiles that were used on the house, making it a family home in all respects. On occasions when I couldn't find my mates, I would make my way up Wanneroo Road past Gobby's Dairy and North Beach Bus Company to Cape Street, to watch the goings on. There they would be toiling away wearing the rather clever sun hats they had made out of newspaper and handkerchiefs. Our imminent eviction from McDonald Street, just past Dog Swamp, saw dad vamp up the work rate to have the house habitable in time. Once the roof was on, it was deemed habitable despite a fair bit of surgery on both the interior and exterior still required. Tuart Hill Primary was but a stone's throw away as was 274 Powell and 275 Roberts Street bus services running along Stoneham Street. We were so excited to see a new playground awaited us in the form of a huge sandpit approximately one acre in size and 40 feet deep on the corner of Cape and French Streets where we had so much fun Also to the delight of us kids, we would still be able to visit our old haunts Tuart Hill Gardens Theatre, Ernie and Louie's Fish and Chips shop and Archbold's store even closer than before, but sadly we would miss Mr Adams travelling grocery truck coming down our street.
