The below story was entered with this photograph into the 2018 History and Heritage Awards:
In 1951 my parents married and my father built our house on land that came under the Perth Road Board. I was only aware of living in 'Stirling' and remember being excited when it was declared a city. Growing up, I was always proud of my brother Leigh. He was fortunate to have holiday work with the City of Stirling. It was a good job. He worked on the garbage trucks, jumping off to collect the metal rubbish bin, hoist it on his shoulders and heave the contents onto the truck before returning the bin to the side of the house and jumping back on the truck. There was a great friendship with the other workers even though my brother was just a teenager and they were evidently more mature. It was the busy period before Christmas. Householders were thankful for the good service they received and left presents for their garbos. Definitely a good job - pay and presents.
