The land was assigned to a pioneer named Thomas Mews. The lake was originally known in 1831 as Mews Lake after Thomas Mews. By 1842 the name changed to Jackadup Lake and then again to the name in which we call it today.
The Manning Family acquired the land around the lake before 1900 and established a dairy. Later the dairy was leased to Robert Bruce who expanded and made it into one of the largest dairies in the district. The milk that was collected was sent to a depot in Jolimont and then sent out to households around Perth.
