To a State House at 6 Muriel Avenue, we went. Which mum paid eighteen shillings to rent. No road existed in Muriel Avenue, only sand, Four houses in a block midst un-cleared land. The semi-trailer bus service, navy and yellow. Travelled on Scarborough Beach Road so narrow. To Jackadder Lake, my brothers would take canoe. Then bury in reeds exact spot they only knew. Muriel Avenue corner store stocked everything. Weekly grocery order, listed all what he would bring. Well-respected Grocer - Mr Campbell - was his name, made up the necessary goods and delivered the same. The milkman delivered milk twixt at 2.00am and 3.00am span, Loaded with pint dipper and ten-gallon milk can. With Clydesdale horse and hurricane lamp on cart, Torches around their bellies, his helpers did dart. The fruit and veggie cart arrived and rang a bell Alerting the neighbours of his presence to sell. The baker boy at 7.00am, arrived with basket in tow, unwrapped, uncut loaves and poppy-seed, over elbow. The iceman came and sold blocks of ice for ice chest. To combat the heat and to keep food at its best. Mr Shakleton, the local butcher, was a jolly soul. Sold meat for many a stew, roast and casserole. Dressed in navy striped white apron, plus bow tie. Guy Fawkes - 5 November, bonfire built sky high. The Watkins man arrived with his famous green tin. With menthol and camphor ointment therein. John Allan's mobile van, provided a home run. Manchester and fashion good to suit everyone. Dr Lankester, the only doctor for local families. Managed surgery and home visits with ease. Observed awesome changes, which never cease to fill me with pride.
