Wooden butter pats were used to shape the butter into squares making it ready for sale and use. The moisture was squeezed from the butter which was then transferred to a wooden board. The butter maker held one of these pats in each hand and worked the butter into shape. The wooden pats are thin, light and easy to hold. The inside of the face is serrated to grip the butter and remove liquid. It was also used to make patterns on the finished butter.
