The theme of movement is the basis for the form of this artwork; movement of the human body through water, movement of people in the aquatic centre and implied visual movement as the viewer walks around the artwork and sees the sculpture from various angles. The sculpture also references the native Balga Tree (Xanthorrhoea) from which the aquatic centre and suburb take their name. The arrangement of the steel poles is reminiscent of the spiky fronds of this indigenous local plant. The sculpture is painted vivid red to make it eye catching and easily seen by passing traffic. Red is an energetic colour and symbolises life blood and relates to the buildings ‘heartbeat’ architectural feature.
