Facsimile by David Carson

"Facsimile (1999) is part of a series of experimental works inspired by aerial imaging. Created after my Geoderma touring exhibition — the result of an artist residency at Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines — this piece reflects my experience of flying over the West Australian landscape. From above, the earth appeared so painterly, with marks, textures, and patterns reminiscent of abstract artworks. In this series, I explored ways to echo the actions of nature itself, using materials and techniques to create a kind of facsimile of the landscape I had witnessed from the air." - David Carson, Artist

Winner of the 1999 City of Stirling Art Award.

The art award judges described Facsimile as "a conceptually challenging approach to landscape, relying on technology such as remote sensing or surface mapping to release an ambiguity in scale and openness that allows a range of interpretations."
