Spot Cash Store

Oswald Maurice Everard Wearne, the grocer, opened a Spot Cash Store on this site around 1939. Wearne would collect orders from local residents and deliver them the next day.  The availability of cool drinks and confectionary was also advertised on the exterior of the building.

The property was purchased by William Patrick Coyne in November 1953 and the name changed to Coyne's Store. It was subsequently owned jointly by him and his wife Marion Rose Coyne from 1982.

The name was changed once more to Mal'z Deli in the early 2010s and renovations saw the distinctive green tiles on the façade replaced with red and blue ones.

The building comprised of a single storey masonry corner shop with rendered and painted brick parapet walls concealing a skillion corrugated iron roof beyond. The parapet steps up in height on the eastern elevation towards the central corner wall, where the entry door is located, and incorporated recessed horizontal bands in the masonry wrapping around the full extent of the parapets. The southern walls had green ceramic tiles to dado height with painted masonry above. The building also incorporated a store room on its north-eastern corner, facing Hastings Street.

The Sundance apartment building is now located on the site of the former building.
