Arthur was 18 years old and lived in Mount Lawley when he enlisted in March 1916. He was wounded in the leg and captured following fighting on 11 April 1917 near Bullecourt, France. He was transferred to Lazarette Verden where he had his leg amputated but continued to be held as a POW until he was repatriated via Holland to England on 7 January 1918. He arrived back home in Australia on 13 May 1918. Arthur married Elsie in 1931 and had one son. Arthur died in South Australia 1949 aged 49.
