Mount Lawley

Subdivision in Mount Lawley was commenced in 1892 by the Sydney and Perth Land Building and Investment Company Ltd. In 1900 businessmen John Robinson and Samuel Copley acquired the area. With Robert J Robinson, the son of John Robinson, Samuel Copley developed the Mt Lawley Estate.

Mt Lawley is part of Swan Location Z, an original crown grant, granted to John Gregory in 1830. Gregory owned the Pineapple Inn and early maps up to 1900 record the name of the area near the Swan River to Guildford Road as 'Pineapple.'

Mount Lawley was named to honour Sir Arthur Lawley, Governor of Western Australia from 1901-02. The area became renowned as a stopping place for travellers in the 1830s, when John Gregory established the Pineapple Inn. Mount Lawley is largely characterised by Federation and Colonial style dwellings. Many of the older character homes are of heritage value and have been renovated and preserved. The Astor Theatre situated on the corner of Beaufort Street and Walcott Street, built in 1911 is one of the suburb's significant landmarks. The Beaucott Buildings situated across the road from Astor Theatre, were constructed in 1938.
