When Arthur enlisted, he was a 30-year-old railway clerk from Mount Lawley. He was shipped out from Melbourne in 1916 commencing his service with the rank of driver. By request, he later joined the 4th Division Artillery as a gunner. He was wounded in action in 1917 and in 1918 was awarded a Military Medal for bravery shown in France. He returned to Australia in 1919. He married Edith in 1925.
