ContributorCommunity HistoryDescriptionThe Karrinyup Library opened on Thursday 19th September 1974 and is considered an iconic example of Perth's brutalist architecture. It was designed during a time when Western Australia was adopting "a more modern identity, characterized by functional yet beautifully composed and balanced public buildings" according to the Art Gallery of WA curator Robert Cook. Other brutalist buildings nearby include Hale School and Featherby House - which was designed by architect Iwan Iwanoff.

Karrinyup Library building is a notable example of the brutalist style, which emerged in the post-war era, characterized by rough or raw, off-form concrete (béton brut), heavy mass, and sculptural, blocky shapes.

The Karrinyup library is part of the broader collection of 1970s Perth public buildings that reflect a "subtle" or "reserved" style of WA brutalism.
