George Joseph Strickland

The George Strickland Clubrooms were named in 2022 In honour of the Hon. George Strickland AM in recognition of his extensive contributions within the City of Stirling, both engaging with and representing the community in a range of levels throughout his life.

George Strickland served as a City of Stirling Councillor (1981-1990), Deputy Mayor (1984-1986) and Mayor (1986-1988) and Chairman of Finance at the City of Stirling, he made many great contributions to the City and Community during this time.

In the 1984/85 season of Hamersley Little Athletics Centre (LAC) at Charles Riley Reserve, George Strickland was instrumental in lobbying and fundraising for the construction of the Wendling Road clubrooms. The clubrooms are still used by Hamersley Little Athletic Centre and the North Coast Raiders Hockey Club to this day.

George Strickland also had a long career in Western Australian State politics and was elected 33rd State Parliament for Scarborough on the 4 February 1989 and re-elected in 1993. The electorate was abolished following redistribution in 1994. He was elected 35th State Parliament for lnnaloo (new seat) on the 14 December 1996. Mr Strickland was elected speaker on the 6 March 1997 after serving as the deputy speaker from June 1993 - November 1996. Mr Strickland was Shadow Minister for Community Services, Multicultural and Ethnic Affairs and Youth from June 1990 - November 1992 as well as, Coalition Shadow Minister for Community Services, Multicultural and Ethnic Affairs November 1992- February 1993. George Strickland Retired from State Parliament in 2001.

George Strickland was named as the Seventh Honorary Freeman of the Municipality conferred on 23 February 2000 in recognition of services to the city and country. George Strickland was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia on the 26 January 2007 for service to the Western Australian Parliament as Speaker of the Legislative Assembly to local government and to the community. He was also awarded the Centenary of Federation Medal in 2003. George dedicated much of his time to his community, being on many local and Parliamentary Committees.
