The below story was entered with this photograph into the 2018 History and Heritage Awards:
In 1985, I purchased the newsagency at 33 West Coast Drive, Watermans Bay, next door to my fast food shop Aussie Maid. I decided to turn it into a surf shop named 'The Bay-Surf'. I needed to keep the news agency licence but didn't realise the work involved. Keeping stock of papers, magazines and 'for sale' ads involved a huge amount of time and I was trying to learn about wet-suits, surfboards and fishing equipment at the same time. By law, because I sold adult magazines sealed in plastic envelope, I had to have a small room with a curtained doorway, so the adult buyers could undo the seal, read and then purchase the magazine of their choice. The general younger public had to be segregated from this adult material. At the end of the month, all unsold magazines were collected, the front page torn off to be sent back to the wholesaler and the unwanted publications were to be thrown in the bin. I had two 13-year-old sons and I didn't want them near the graphic magazines. One day two of the regular council rubbish collectors were in my shop, shuffling from foot to foot. ''What?'' I enquired. Naming one of my sons, they asked if he was working that day. My alert button began ringing. ''Why?'', I demanded to know. It seemed they had paid for magazines and were here to collect. I knew immediately it was the adult mags I had thrown in the bin. It seemed my son was climbing in, collecting them and then selling them 'on the side'. Deep down I admired his entrepreneurship, but if caught he was in big trouble and what if he branched out to selling them in the school yard? I threatened him with the police, prison and everything I could think of. He got the message, but he also got the thrill of extra money by wheeling and dealing. Now grown up, my entrepreneurial son is doing very well.
