The below story was entered with this photograph into the 2018 History and Heritage Awards:
Having arrived on the sunny shores of the lucky country on 6 of August 1967 as English migrants, we couldn't wait to see the Australian seaside. Soon after settling into our temporary migrant accommodation, our first venture was to see the beach. Scarborough Beach was our local, so we set off to explore. We arrived at Scarborough and found the beach, to our surprise; quite deserted, it was still the middle of the Australian winter! But having come from England it felt warm to us, so we were still thrilled to be there. We strolled along the beachfront amazed at the wide expanse of beach, how clean and white the sand was and how blue the water was. A touch of nostalgia crept in when we discovered the Luna Park Fairground at the corner of Scarborough Beach Road and West Coast Highway, where the Luna Shopping Centre now stands. It fondly reminded us of the English seaside but sadly, was demolished soon after in 1972. This photo documents our first visit to Scarborough Beach in 1967. In the photo are my mum, dad, myself and my youngest sister. My older sister took the photo. Scarborough Beach became our family favourite beach for many, many years, and has since been enjoyed by multiple generations of our family, some of whom are Scarborough locals. ''Happy days, happy memories.''
