It was 1969 and we lived at Scarborough, a few streets from the beach. Even from early September my friends and I would go down there as we were such ardent beachgoers. Scarborough was the most popular beach at that time, with its beautiful expanse of soft white sand, the smell of the tanning lotion machines in action, fish and chips, hamburger sandwiches and cold cut watermelon served at Peters by the Sea. It was also a great venue for the Miss West Coast competition.
On one particular day, who should we see but none other than Dominic DeNucci who at that time was the most popular World Championship Wrestling champ. He had come down to Scarborough from his hotel to take a dip. We loved watching the wrestling on TV (even though we suspected it was all fake), but as soon as he and his troupe walked onto the sand, we recognized him. Brazenly, we walked up and asked if we may take a photograph with him, and he agreed. We were tickled pink as at that time the WWF wrestlers were idolized like rock stars.
