Captain Charles Kingsford-Smith and his crew disembarking the Southern Cross at the Maylands Aerodrome in 1928, after completing the first non-stop flight across Australia from Point Cook near Melbourne. Captain Kingsford Smith was the first to attempt the Trans-Pacific flight to Australia in 1928. The Maylands Aerodrome opened in 1923. After forty years of service the aerodrome officially ceased operations on the 30th of June 1963. Due to it being so close to the Perth Airport, it became a hazard to flying operations. The first air mail to England leaves Maylands Aerodrome on the 9 December 1934. Maylands was part of the Perth Road Board, Shire of Perth and City of Stirling, transferring into the City of Bayswater in 1998.
