Maylands

Maylands was developed during the 1890's and closely borders Mount Lawley and Inglewood. The railway line was built in the 1880's making transport accessible and a factor in the success of the area. Brick and tile making at Maylands Brickworks company was a major industry, with its Swan River frontage supplying water. A housing development in 1896 identified the area with the name 'Maylands' with developer Mephan Ferguson possibly naming the suburb for his aunt and daughter both named May. Edgar W Hamer of Golds Estates which developed much of Mount Lawley and Inglewood, said to have surveyed the area in the month of May.

Maylands was the site of the Aerodrome, supporting West Australian Airways Ltd which flew the first commercial air service in Australia. Maylands Aerodrome was made famous with the landing of Charles Kingford Smith, completing the first non stop flight across Australia. The Royal West Australian Institute for the Blind was established in 1895, located on Whatley Crescent. The Blind Institute of WA's heritage building, also known as the Royal WA Institute for the Blind, has significant associations with the City of Stirling. The site is a representative example of the Inter War Stripped Classical architectural style and is a landmark feature within the Whatley Crescent streetscape. It has historic importance for its social and educational associations with the service activities to the community. The building, constructed in 1937, served as the "public face" of the Royal WA Institute for the Blind and provided vocational and educational opportunities for visually impaired individuals, reflecting a commitment from the government and community

Maylands was part of the City of Stirling until 1998 when boundary changes made it part of the City of Bayswater.
