Noonga Biddis Kaarl Keip - Keip (blue) by Peter John Farmer II and Jason Hirst

Artist Statement: ‘Travel was something that Noongar/Aboriginal people did a lot of in traditional times … Consequently, there were a lot of tracks or trails, sort of like roads of paths … These paths or roads were not ever straight or easy to navigate, so you needed help to find the markers …’ These four functional artworks are named after four Nyoongar concepts: Noongar (people), Bidis (tracks), Kaarl (fire) and Keip (water). Nyoongar people used Kaarl throughout this area for firestick farming. The pattern of the burning made Bidis which helped people access resources. Keip was their most important resource for survival.
