Hanging Mandarin by Tyrown Waigana

The Speakers are a direct response to the theme of Cultural Conversation. These figures have a large hole in their heads representing a mouth with no other facial features and no limbs because their primal function is to talk. They are based on the concept of who can get away with saying what in a cultural and artistic context. As a young Indigenous person from an urban area I have noticed more interest in my art when it's a critical piece - as if it's expected of me - whereas a senior member from a rural community can simply paint a tree and that can be enough. I'm not trying to be critical of people's work I'm just observing parallels. - Tyrown Waigana Artist
