The history of photography and television is a fascinating journey through time and technology. Photographic history is a key theme in the Stirling History Collection, with the Western Australian Camera Club established over 100 years ago and based in Tuart Hill. Anyone is welcome to join their group, and they have regular meetings and outings.

City of Stirling local, Richard Goodwin, is very much involved in the Western Australian Camera Club, he has given two talks at our Libraries, most recently about photographer Bill Angove, and his book Sparks of Genius – The inventive Photography of Bill Angove.

There are some great photographers in the Stirling History Collection to explore, for example if you look up Reginald Lambert you will see we have an original landscape photograph of Scarborough beach, and there is an oral history to listen to. Reg had a photographic studio in Inglewood. Bruno Zimmermann, owner of the Astor Theatre, also started in photography as a young man, establishing a successful business and had a photography shop in Mt Lawley. E.L Mitchell is also another significant photographer, and we have a collection of his images on the catalogue, featuring William Robinson (Robinson Reserve) There is a book on him available in our Libraries called Agents of Empire : How E.L Mitchell’s Photographs shaped Australia.

The suburb of Dianella was known as Western Australia's media hub, hosting Perth's television stations TVW now Channel Seven, STW now Channel Nine, and NEW now Channel Ten.
