Rwandan Kwibuku memorial

ContributorCommunity HistoryDescriptionA memorial in remembrance of the 800,000 to one million Rwandans massacred over 100 days in 1994, located at Stirling Civic Gardens.

The sculpture is entitled ‘Kwibuka’, meaning ‘To Remember.’ The Kwibuka Memorial is made from pure black granite. It features laser etched text and stainless steel flames incorporating the themes ‘Remember, Unite, Renew’. The memorial was installed in Civic Gardens, City of Stirling in time for the unveiling in May 2024.

The memorial is the first of its kind in the Asia-Pacific and the group Rwandan Community Abroad Perth said it provides an essential space to alleviate the emotional stress by not being able to travel to Rwanda to honour loved ones killed.

Stirling mayor Mark Irwin has described his pride in the city and council members to have the memorial at the civic gardens after long discussions with the local Rwandan community.

Officially referred to by the UN as the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda, the Rwandan community of Perth have a place to honour the victims, with the launch of the memorial commemorating the 30th anniversary of the devastating massacre.
