Charles Lawrence Riley

Charles Lawrence Riley was an Anglican bishop and son of Charles Owen Leaver Riley, Archbishop of Perth.

He was educated at Hale School, then at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge.

He returned to Hale as Rector from 1905 - 1906 and founded St Mary's Anglican Girls School in 1921. He was the first principal of the school and Chairman of the Board of Directors.

Charles became the Archdeacon of Northam in 1930 and Bishop of Bendigo in 1938. He was also Chaplain of the Forces in the Australian Army from 1942 - 1957.

Sadly, his son, Charles Owen Riley was drowned in 1954 when rescuing swimmers who were caught in an undertow at Waterman. Bishop Riley dedicated a reserve in North Beach to the memory of his son in 1958.
