Heritage site marker Lake Gwelup primary school

In the 1880s many families settled in Carine to establish dairies and market gardens; so in 1904 resident Walter Muller applied to the Education Department requesting a school be constructed. Plans were drawn up and the Department opted for a wooden structure for 260 pounds. The teachers quarters was incorporated into the schoolroom, as a separate building proved too costly. The school opened in Carine on 3rd April 1905 but closed in 1913 due to low student numbers. Transfer of the school to Gwelup was then considered due to an increase in the number of school aged children there. The former Carine School was transported to this Gwelup site at a cost of 125 pounds and opened on 18th May 1914. This single room, timber framed classroom exhibits characteristics typical of its era and played an important role in the education of people from the surrounding area.
