Bestry Cottage

Robert Ansell Partridge received a land grant in 1829 for Location K, becoming the first European owner of the land on which the cottage sits. Soon after, Partridge arranged for Walter Boyd Andrews to occupy and develop the grant. Partridge named the area Daviot Park.

The Heritage Council of Western Australia describes the building's historical value:

Cottage, Old Balcatta Road is located on land owned by George Walpole Leake, the father of the third Premier of Western Australia from 1901 to 1902.  Leake owned the land from 1868 to 1886; however, it is unlikely that the cottage was constructed during this period.  The cottage was probably constructed by Bernard Duffy, who owned the land from 1886 to 1917 and was a prominent settler in the area.

The cottage was unoccupied for a considerable time, while some of the outbuildings had uses associated with the market gardens nearby. The former stables were used as a flower sales shed for Tony's for flowers. The North Suburban Historical Society carried out restoration works at the cottage around 2003.

The cottage is a representative example of a simple, four-roomed cottage with a hipped corrugated iron roof, front verandah and central front door, typical of cottages constructed in Western Australia in the mid to late nineteenth century.
