James Bond

James (Jim) was born in Buckinghamshire, England in 1896 and came to Australia with his parents, George and Martha Bond, and his eight siblings in 1910 on the SS Armadale.

The Bond family lived in Leederville for two years before moving to Osborne Park (now Tuart Hill) where an allotment of land was transferred to his father George Bond in 1918. 

James Bond enlisted in 1916 and became part of the 51st Battalion, the same unit as his brother George. Jim received a gunshot wound to his thigh in April of 1917, then after recuperating in hospital went back to fighting in France. The following year, James was awarded a Military Medal for bravery as documented in his war service record:

"On night of 12/13th August 1918, during an attack on enemy position (in France), these men who were company runners did excellent work carrying important messages through heavy shell fire and thereby were responsible for maintaining communication between company commanders."

James returned safely home after the war and, at one time, drove the tram which went along Main Street, Osborne Park. He died in 1967.
