Bond Cottage

Bond Cottage was built for the Bond family in the early 1920s at the corner of Curtis and Main Streets in what was then Osborne Park and is now Tuart Hill. Curtis Street became North Beach Road later, and is now known as North Beach Drive.

Bond Cottage was a perfect example of a 1920s settlers’ home established in the Osborne Park area (now Tuart Hill) which, at the time, was on the rural-urban fringe. The early settlers lived a simple life without scheme water, electricity, and sewerage.

The Bond family lived in a shed on the 5 acre property until the cottage was built. The new home had four rooms - a kitchen, dining room and two bedrooms.  The front verandah was enclosed for many years and used as a sleep out for the boys.

The property also included first one and then a second outhouse, a laundry in an outbuilding, a chicken pen and shed. 

The family had some pigs, ducks, chickens, dog, cat, and a horse to pull their cart.  The pigs were entered into the Osborne Park Agriculture Show and won several awards.  There was also a small orchard with fruit trees and grape vines.

Bond Cottage was acquired by the City of Stirling after the death of its last inhabitant, Agnes Bond. It has been restored and is now in use by the Men's Shed, as their shop. Its current location is at 8 Vasto Place, Balcatta WA 6021.
