Heritage site marker North Beach primary school

The North Beach area was originally a holiday resort, with only a few residents, so the need for a school did not arise until the 1930s when housing shortages and the economic Depression resulted in many holiday homes being rented to families with school age children. This influx of permanent residents continued until after World War II. 

The original school was opened on 11 June 1923. In 1934 it began operating from the home of Mrs Elliott, at George Street with 28 students. On 8th April 1935, classes began in a new purpose built 30ft x 20ft classroom which was constructed by Mr Macquire for 357 pounds.

The name North Beach Primary School changed to 'Hamersley' in 1946 but to avoid confusion, reverted back to 'North Beach' in 1970 when a new school was built in the new suburb of Hamersley.
