North Beach

Originally, this area was named Balcatta, therefore information on North Beach must also refer to the suburb of Balcatta. Alternate spellings were Balkatta and Balgatta. The meaning is thought to be ‘his hill’.

The first evidence of relatively permanent dwelling in this coastal area was the whaling station set up by Patrick Marmion in the locality now known as Sorrento. The station ran for about five years until Marmion’s death. A monument was set up in 1970 to commemorate this early whaling site. Australian whaling was overshadowed by the American whalers, who had been coming to these shores before the settlement of the Swan River Colony.

Description

The name originated when Charles Crossland, a surveyor referred to Samuel Richard Hamersley’s owner of the coastal lease as ''his North Beach Coast run''. For convenience the name was accepted. North Beach was originally part of the suburb of Balcatta. In 1837 Edward Hamersley settled in the area and built a home known as the ''Castle''. The land was passed on to Samuel Richard Hamersley after the death of Edward Hamersley in 1874. The name ‘North Beach’ was officially accepted in 1888 but wasn’t formally approved until 1954. The area became a quarantine station during the gold rush era for camels entering the country for work in the goldfields. During the 1940’s and 1950’s the suburb became a vacation destination with many coastal shack and holiday home being built. Residential development occurred in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s. The town site was gazetted in 1964. Star Swamp in a significant landmark extending across 96 hectares of land.
