Georgina Alma Venville

Alma Venville was the first female Mayor of the City of Stirling. Alma Venville was the representative of the Maylands ward. She was first elected to in this position on 26th May 1973. She was Mayor from 1975 to 1977. She retired from the councillor position for the Maylands ward at close of poll on Saturday 4th May 1991, after eighteen years of public service. Mrs Venville lived in Maylands for over 45 years and was a very active member of the ward. She was elected as Honorary Secretary of the Maylands Ratepayers Association at its inaugural meeting and held the office for many years.

Mrs Georgina Alma Venville was born in Queensland and later came to Perth where she was educated at Bassendean Primary School, and Perth Girls High School. She was a keen swimmer in her youth having been a founding member of the Swanbourne Lifesaving Club, and her interest in the sport continued as vice-patron of the Maylands Swimming Club. She had one son and three grandchildren. Her husband, Harry worked at the WA Royal Institute for the Blind for nearly 50 years. She wrote about her public life in her book titled 'Musings of Madame Mayor', (1993).
